Improving Time to Treatment with Telemedicine

August 22nd, 2013

SIH crossed a significant milestone in the future of medicine just last week-the introduction of Telemedicine in the SIH family.

Telemedicine went live in the stroke program at Herrin Hospital last Thursday. This technological advance gives physicians the ability to diagnose stroke virtually from various locations. Telemedicine allows the physician to examine and diagnoses the patient during a time critical stroke evaluation. With stroke, “time saved is brain saved.” The most effective stroke treatments are only available if the stroke is recognized and diagnosed within the first three hours of the first symptoms.

Learn what happens during a stroke.

Using telemedicine technology, a physician can diagnose the patient and allow care to occur more quickly. Faster patient care leads to better patient outcomes!

SIH is an early adopter in making this investment into telemedicine. Next steps include integration of the technology in the stroke program and emergency departments at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and St. Joseph Memorial Hospital.
