Walk This Way

In an effort to encourage people to get more exercise, Southern Illinois Healthcare and University Mall have teamed up on a new walking for fitness promotion.

A formal kickoff is set for Thursday, September 1 from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM at the University Mall in front of SIH The Place, along with a free breakfast. Participants can set individual goals and are eligible to receive prizes. Upon registration, walkers receive a tee shirt, free blood pressure monitoring services and invites to monthly meetings featuring guest speakers and free refreshments. The Strutter’s program is open to anyone age 18 or older.

“It’s a great option for a cool indoor place to log your steps in the summer and a warm “freeze free” zone in the cold of winter,” said SIH Senior Membership Program Manager Mona Kerns.

University Mall Manager Debra Tindall characterizes the combined effort as a “great fit” for many individuals from the regional community. “We offer year-round access, regardless of inclement weather, and with bus transportation, it’s easy to get to the mall to log your steps,” said Tindall.

Of note, participants are not required to log their steps solely at the mall; steps can be logged and counted from any location.
