New Life Milestone

In February of 2009, the first Gastric Bypass surgery was conducted at New Life Weight Loss Center. Five short years later, they have surpassed 1000 weight loss surgeries and have become the only Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) in the territory between Poplar Bluff, MO and Louisville, KY.

Not only does metabolic and bariatric surgery assist in life changing weight loss, it also results in an almost 99% cure rate for type II diabetes.

In addition to surgical procedures, New Life Weight Loss Center also conducts six free information sessions a month, six to eight support groups a month as well as an annual Obesity Awareness Walk.

The comprehensive program is thanks in part to:
  • Naresh Ahuja, MD, FASMBS
  • Deepu Sudhakaran, MD, MBA
  • Physician Assistant, Amy Goetz, PAC
  • Program Coordinator, Heather Fear, MS, RN, CBN
  • The dedicated staff at New Life Weight Loss Center
  • 5 certified Bariatric nurses (CBN)
  • The whole surgery team
  • Nurses on the North Unit
  • Clinical Dietitians
  • Administration

New Life Weight Loss Center, a service of Herrin Hospital, offers the only comprehensive bariatric program in the area.

Wendee’s New Life

I have always struggled with my weight and been the typical “yo-yo” dieter. Typical as in – lose 10, gain 20. For the last 10 years, it’s been much more than a struggle. I hated my weight, my body, my dress size, myself; I was obese, out of control and unable to fix it.

In the summer of 2012, I decided to look into the options that New Life Weight Loss Center offered. After attending the information seminar, I knew I was ready to start this journey and regain my life. As a devoted mommy of young girls, I wanted to be fit enough to enjoy every minute of their childhood and healthy enough to live to see my grandchildren graduate college.

I chose Gastric Sleeve Surgery, which was performed in November 2012 by Dr. Naresh Ahuja. I felt this option was best for me and I haven’t regretted it for one second. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Today, at 9 months post-op, I have lost 108 pounds. (Four pounds more than my original goal weight!) I started this journey at 244, wearing size 22, and now I currently weigh 136, wearing size 6. I have lost an incredible amount of weight during this journey, but I’m more proud of what I’ve gained…..my life, my health and the ability to love myself.

My journey hasn’t just been “a surgery”. New Life Weight Loss Center, Dr. Ahuja and his entire team have been right beside me every step of the way. From support group meetings, nutritional advice, meal planning, exercise guidance, educational classes and continual follow-up care, I have not only gained a new life, but a new family. For this I will be forever grateful.

Aimee’s New Life

For as long as I could remember, I’ve struggled with my weight.

Having a weight problem was a trait I inherited from both sides of my family. As a child I was always chubby. When I graduated high school I was 125 lbs but I was heavier compared to others in my class. I went through my 20s, 30s and into my 40s gaining and losing, gaining and losing, finally reaching my all time heaviest—275 lbs. Being 5'5”, that made me MORBIDLY OBESE!

In January of 2012, I had a friend mention she was interested in having weight loss surgery, and asked if I would do it with her. I have known several people who have undergone weight loss surgery in the past and had amazing results; however, I wasn't sure whether or not my medical provider would cover the procedure. I attended an information seminar in February and I was made aware I had 100% coverage. I immediately scheduled my first appointment with Dr. Deepu Sudhakaran at New Life Weight Loss Center on April 1st.

On July 5, 2012, I had the Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass surgery and have never looked back. I am no longer diabetic and I no longer suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea. My current weight is 160 pounds. I have shrunk from a size 22 jeans to a size 12. I still have a goal to lose another 10 lbs, but I am beyond happy where I am. I have more energy, more confidence and of course I look much better and happier!

Thank you to my friend, Michelle for suggesting we embark on this journey together, thank you to Dr. Sudhakaran, the entire staff at New Life Weight Loss Center in Herrin, the nursing staff at Herrin Hospital and my wonderful friends and supportive family. I haven't had any problems since surgery and I have had absolutely no reservations or regrets. Every day is a new day full of choices to make and I’ve started a new life making the right ones.

Aimee Nance, 45 years old, Cobden, IL

Tammy’s New Life

My name is Tammy McGowan and two years ago, I was on the verge of dying.

Two years ago, I was 385 pounds, wore a size 7X, and was as wide as a twin sized mattress. I suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorder, urinary incontinence and depression. And two years ago, my doctor told me I would die within two years if I didn’t completely change my life around.

Soon after, I ran across an ad for New Life Weight Loss Center. I thought, “Lord, if this is my sign, let’s do this.” So I called and got information and attended Dr. Naresh Ahuja’s information seminar. As soon as I left the seminar, I knew exactly what I had to do. He was very detailed about each option and I had made my choice. After the seminar, I went straight to his office and made an appointment to see him.

This was the best choice I could’ve ever made. I immediately started my pre-op diet and I will not lie to you, it was difficult at first, but within a couple of months, I was ready to have my surgery. On February 7, 2011, I had gastric bypass surgery.

The day of my surgery, my diabetes was gone, just from diet and exercise. By the time I left the hospital, my high blood pressure was also gone. Within a couple of months, I had lost 100 pounds and also gotten rid of my thyroid problems. I was able to do more things outside with my daughter and husband.

Today, I am free from all those medical problems that were holding me down. I now weigh 207 pounds and wear a size medium/large shirt and size 11 pants. Wow! What a difference! I owe it all to Dr. Ahuja and New Life Weight Loss Center. I am forever grateful for them and I will continue to thank God for each of them. I have now dedicated my new life to helping others in their weight loss journeys and to help people live new, healthy lifestyles to give them the confidence they need to succeed.

Without New Life Weight Loss Center, I would not be standing here sharing my 180 pound weight loss story with you. Thanks again to Dr. Ahuja and New life Weight Loss Center. May God bless you!

New Life Weight Loss Center receives prestigious Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence accreditation

Bariatric patients in Southern Illinois have reason to rejoice!

New Life Weight Loss Center at Herrin Hospital is now the first and only accredited Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in a 90-mile radius.

The prestigious three-year accreditation by the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) recognizes consistent excellence in clinical practice, patient outcomes and facilities at the center. The accomplishment is significant as it opens new doors to Medicare patients requiring weight loss surgery.

The honor coincides with an additional accomplishment: completion of the surgeons' 500th surgery in the three years since the inception of the program.

“Our program is comprehensive in every way and truly changes lives,” said Deepu Sudhakaran, bariatric (weight loss) surgeon and partner at New Life Weight Loss Center. “The accreditation program required a set of stringent certification criteria that stressed safety, proficiency and volume.”

“The extensive approval process also included a rigorous site inspection, which we passed with flying colors,” Sudhakaran said. “The Center of Excellence award is a quality marker that tells patients they can expect the same, high-quality national standard of service here in Herrin that they would receive in big-city hospitals.”

Naresh Ahuja, bariatric (weight loss) surgeon and medical director of New Life Weight Loss Center, noted that weight loss is not just a matter of getting the surgery done.

“It’s a matter of choosing a skilled surgeon supported by a center with robust pre and post-operative support systems in place,” Ahuja said. “In the three years since the inception of our program, we have consistently delivered safe, effective evidence-based care to all of our patients, in accordance with the best practices in the field today. I congratulate Southern Illinois Healthcare, our team and patients who have been instrumental in helping us achieve this milestone.”
