The mission of our Wellness Program at SIH is to improve the health and well-being of the community members in our service area and to improve the health and well-being of SIH employees. This is accomplished through a strategic wellness plan that includes educational programming and preventative health screenings and disease management; ultimately helping to control healthcare expenditures in our service area. The goal is to extend the wellness services we currently provide our employees out to the community members.
Program components will include biometric screenings, health risk assessments, educational programming, health challenges and activity based programs and a disease management component.
For many Americans, individual behavior and lifestyle choices influence the development and course of these chronic conditions. Unhealthy behaviors, such as a poor diet, lack of physical activity and tobacco use are risk factors for many chronic diseases. A high calorie diet and sedentary lifestyle commonly result in excessive weight gain. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for a large number of chronic diseases, most significantly, type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure, stroke and hypertension. Encouraging individuals to adopt healthy habits and practices may reduce the burden of chronic disease in communities.
