Aquatic Therapy

Through an alliance between the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Southern Illinois Healthcare, southern Illinoisans have access to the same expert care that has earned RIC the ranking of “Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.

Aquatic therapy programs are designed to reinforce basic physical therapy programs. Performing therapy exercises in water provides patients with the freedom of movement that allows them to accomplish more than in a land-based program. Many people who can not do exercises on land are able to do water exercises very well, because the water decreases the pressure and weight on their body.

Therapists can help patients in many forms of aquatic exercises, including:

  • Use of flotation devises for better balance and posture
  • Exercising with special paddles, boots or gloves
  • Ai Chi exercises to incorporate deep breathing
  • Swimming strokes for advanced strength and endurance

Aquatic therapy is available at Rehab Unlimited in Carbondale and Herrin.
