Amanda Mulch, MD obviously loves what she does for a living. Her eyes absolutely light up when she talks about the joy of watching a mother go through a pregnancy and then deliver a healthy baby.
Mulch is nearly brought to tears when she recalls an unforgettable experience she had while working as a resident. An expectant mother had come into the hospital with placenta previa, a serious condition that can cause bleeding.
The woman had begun hemorrhaging and lost a large amount of blood. Mulch had to perform an emergency cesarean section and a hysterectomy. Thankfully, both mommy and baby recovered very well.
Mulch was walking down the hallway a few days later when she passed the woman’s husband and young son. She recalled overhearing the little boy ask his daddy who she was. “That’s the doctor that saved your mommy’s life,” he responded.
Though the whole experience was stressful, it gave her such a wonderful feeling to have been a part of what she calls “a miracle.”
When Mulch first decided to become a physician, she thought she would probably go into family practice; however, after her third year in medical school she found all the aspects of working as an obstetrician/gynecologist to be very rewarding.
“I love surgery, and I love delivering babies,” said Mulch. “What a perfect fit to be able to follow someone during such an exciting experience as pregnancy. I love it.”
Mulch attended undergrad school at Southern Illinois University and received her medical training at the SIU School of Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.
Mulch said she has always been inspired by her parents. They were high school sweethearts and after being married and having a family they went back to school to further their educations.
Mulch is on staff at Southern Illinois OB/GYN Associates and practices at both the Herrin and Carbondale locations.
Originally from Quincy, Illinois, Mulch and her husband, Brandon, now reside in Carbondale with their two dogs. She loves southern Illinois and looks forward to enjoying two of her hobbies, antiquing and photography, while living here.
