Job Shadowing

The CDC has established guidelines for monitoring and managing ill healthcare personnel. SIH will follow these guidelines. However, as more is learned about H1N1, these guidelines may change. It may be necessary to modify our procedures to reflect updated CDC recommendations. Effective immediately, all job shadowing at Southern Illinois Healthcare facilities is ceased until April 1, 2010. High school students who are currently enrolled in a CNA program or health occupations course requiring clinical experiences, may continue their clinical experiences at SIH, however, must follow the guidelines that were distributed to their guidance or health occupations instructor.

Job shadowing is an excellent way to learn more about the career field you are interested in pursuing. Job shadowing allows you to explore different career areas and opportunities that may interest you. When “shadowing” an employee for a few hours or for a full day, you get an insider’s look into what the person’s job involves. The shadowed person can show you the benefits, challenges, rewards and day to day involvements of their position.

The job shadowing work experience is a temporary, unpaid exposure to the workplace. Job shadowing is available to employees and non SIH employees that are enrolled in either a high school or college educational program.

All job shadowing must be scheduled through the facilities Education department. Please contact Education at least 2 weeks in advance.

Before the job shadowing experience begins, you must provide:
  • Proof of medical insurance
  • An original or copy of your student ID (employee ID for SIH staff)
  • TB skin test results (at least a 1 step test) active within one year
You must also do the following:
(the HIPAA answer sheet, signed Confidentiality Agreement, and Waiver & Release of Liability must be turned into the facility Education department on your first scheduled job shadowing day).
