Through an alliance between the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Southern Illinois Healthcare, southern Illinoisans have access to the same expert care that has earned RIC the ranking of “Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.
For people who have difficulty as a result of injury or disease, occupational therapy helps individuals regain or strengthen skills needed for day-to-day life, including activities such as getting dressed, bathing and cooking.
Occupational therapists provide inpatient care at all three SIH hospitals. Outpatient therapy, for people who have been discharged from the hospital or do not need 24-hour nursing care, is available at Rehab Unlimited facilities in Carbondale, Herrin, Murphysboro and Anna.

Occupational therapists utilize cutting-edge technology to help patients recover as much function as possible. Our therapists are certified to use the SaeboFlex, a device that supports the weakened wrist, hand and fingers. The SaeboFlex positions the wrist and fingers into an open hand position in preparation for functional activities. The patient is able to grasp an object by voluntarily flexing his or her fingers. The spring system then helps in re-opening the hand to release the object.
