Speech Therapy

Through an alliance between the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Southern Illinois Healthcare, southern Illinoisans have access to the same expert care that has earned RIC the ranking of “Best Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.

People may benefit from speech therapy after a trauma or stroke, or because of a physical deficit or developmental delay.

Speech/language pathology helps people to overcome problems in the following areas:

  • Speech problems due to the loss of the voice box, a lisp or the effects of a stroke.
  • Language problems such as understanding and correctly using words, numbers or gestures.
  • Cognition or “thinking” skills used for concentration and attention spans.
  • Swallowing skills involving the nerves and muscles of the tongue and throat.
  • Specialized testing for individuals with swallowing disorders is available.

Speech therapy is available on an outpatient basis through Rehab Unlimited facilities in Carbondale, Herrin and Murphysboro. Find a location.
