Deep Fried Pies

Jason loved to eat. But it wasn’t just about the food; it was the tradition around the dinner table that he enjoyed as well. Not only did his aunt make the best “deep fried pies,” but they also played games called “Guess the Ingredients.” Combine the love of fried foods with a mostly sedentary lifestyle, it was no surprise to him that he topped out at nearly 400 pounds. “As far back as I can remember, I was a big kid. But I tried hard to not let my weight stop me from doing things that I wanted to do. I played football, baseball and even sand volleyball into my thirties. But I also enjoyed food…and I ate hard.” Family gatherings were a place where he could eat as much as he wanted, and was expected to do so. Jason considered himself a “high functioning food addict.” He didn’t let his weight issues get him down. But the older he got, the more he felt the effects of his added weight. He remembered about 15 years ago, he was living in Colorado Springs and some friends hiked Pikes Peak. He wasn’t able to go due to his health. He knew it was time to change his life.

Reverse the Curse

Although Jason was active and happy, his weight was bound to catch up to him. His own father died of a massive heart attack at the age of 44. It devastated him and he realized he was on the same path. It wasn’t until his daughter came along that he knew he had to make a change…and fast. “I was not going to let history repeat itself for my family. I had always thought about surgery, but quickly dismissed it. I thought I could just stick to a diet and exercise and I would lose weight.” The weight came off, but it never lasted more than a couple of months. He wanted to be here for his daughter. He wanted to be able to play with her and not be out of breath.

Perfect Timing

Jason knew it was now or never. He attended a New Life Weight Loss Center info session. He was more than ready to make the change. “The whole process was less than 120 days for me from the info session to surgery.” Jason had gastric sleeve done on August 5, 2014. He started tracking his weight in June of 2014 at 375 pounds and on March 5, 2016, his weight was 215 pounds! More importantly, Jason felt amazing! In January of 2016, Jason turned 40 years old—but felt better than when he was 25! His relationship with the New Life Weight Loss Center staff and bariatric surgeon, Dr. Naresh Ahuja made the process so much easier. He ran into Dr. Ahuja at a community event this past winter and Jason was wearing a suit that was entirely too big for him. He thanked Dr. Ahuja and said, “You and your team have saved my life!” To which Dr. Ahuja responded, “My part was easy…you have done all the hard work.”

Planning for the Future

With Jason’s daughter and wife by his side, he is ready to take on the world! “I couldn’t hike Pikes Peak 15 years ago, but now, I know I can conquer that mountain and more. My weight loss motivates me to keep pushing and reaching for each amazing day the good Lord has given us. Life is so good—so start living!” More importantly, he knows he will be here to watch his daughter grow up and someday, walk her down the aisle.
