 “Cancer And End-of-Life Care” Teleconference comes to JALC on March 15th

Southern Illinois Healthcare, First United Methodist Church of Carbondale, and John A. Logan College will present the Hospice Foundation of America’s 17th Annual National Teleconference, “Cancer and End-of-Life Care,” on March 24 at the JALC campus in Carterville, IL. Each year this award-winning, televised broadcast is seen in more than 2,000 communities across North America, reaching an estimated live audience of 125,000 people. The program provides an opportunity for a wide variety of professionals to share and exchange ideas and obtain continuing education credits.
Moderated by Frank Sesno, Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The George Washington University, the teleconference will address care options related to cancer diagnoses as well as loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional care-givers. It will also examine psychosocial aspects of cancer, pain management, and ethical issues related to the disease.

Immediately following the teleconference, a local panel will answer questions and provide their own commentary on the featured discussion. This panel is moderated by Dr. Mary Pohlmann and includes Dr. Elbert Fasnacht, SIH Palliative Care Medical Director; Dr. Peter Graham, Medical Oncologist, Premier Oncology Care, Carbondale; Cynthia Davis, SIH RN - Case Manager; and Karen Henderson, MSW, LCSW Hospice Counseling Supervisor.

Attendees must register by March 15, including a $5 registration fee which includes lunch. Registration and lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the teleconference takes place from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 24 in Room F-119 of the John A. Continuing education credits are available through HFA for: nurses, social workers, counselors, funeral directors, clergy, psychologists, physicians, nursing home administrators and others. Please verify CE availability with your professional or state board approval. There is a $25 online processing fee per certificate, per participant.

Sesno leads a panel of noted authorities that includes: Yvette Colón, Director of Education & Support at American Pain Foundation; Malene Davis, President & CEO at Capital Hospice; Kenneth J. Doka, Professor of Gerontology at The College of New Rochelle; Richard Payne, Director, Institute on Care at the End of Life, Duke University; Sherry R Schachter, Director Bereavement Services at Calvary Hospital/Hospice; and Brad Stuart, Medical Director at Sutter VNA & Hospice.

Dr. Elbert Fasnacht, one of the local panelists for the event said the subject matter of teleconference is important for caregivers across many fields.
"End of life care is often just that, a form of care for multiple disciplines, all of which bring something to the ultimate care of the patient," Fasnacht said.

“The Teleconference should be of interest to professionals in various medical and social service fields, but also to anyone interested in dealing with impending death from cancer,” said Dr. Mary Pohlmann, the panel moderator. “Our local discussion will bring the discussion close to home with resources available in our community.”
