What is a Surgical Technician?

Surgical technologists (also called OR techs, surgical techs, and scrub techs) work alongside surgeons, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team in the operating room. The role of the surgical technologist is to ensure a sterile & organized environment and to assist before, during, and after the operation.

Program Overview:

This 6-9 month paid training program provides you the skills and knowledge necessary to function as a surgical technician. You will be paid for your training. Participants will start by attending in-depth classes tailored to the OR which include Medical Terminology, Pharmacology, Anatomy and Physiology, and Surgical Instruments. After you complete those classes, you will begin your clinical practicum. Clinical Practicum includes traveling to different hospitals to gain knowledge from different types of surgical experiences. You will go to Herrin Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Harrisburg Medical Center as well as St Joseph Memorial in Murphysboro. There will be skills check offs with your instructors and preceptors along the way. You will need to scrub 100 cases minimum in order to complete the program.

After completion of the program, you will join our SIH team for a minimum of two years and be expected to be on call in a rotation. In addition to being paid during your training, you will be employed and paid as a full-time surgical technician after your training is complete. This is a contract program, and the contract takes effect upon completion.

Applicant Requirements:

  • High school degree or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification prior to beginning clinical practicum
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as you will be expected to interact with team members and patients
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Respect for patient confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
