As a species, our newer generations continue to live longer with time. As a society, the burden of illness among the older populations is growing due to improved survival from better care and better health awareness. Benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH is an almost universal phenomenon in the older male. It can present with obvious symptoms but also subtle signs. The result is almost always a diminished quality of life due to poor urination, night time awakenings and even catheter dependence. Our discussion will focus on the why, how and what of BPH, along with the treatments.
