Coach Kerry Martin

Kerry Martin's life has been defined by dedication—to his family, his students, his athletes, and his faith. After 33 years as a social studies teacher and 37 years as a coach, including 30 as a head football coach, Kerry has left an indelible mark on Southern Illinois education and athletics.

Kerry's coaching journey took him across the region, beginning with four years in Sparta, followed by three years in Flora, eight years in Carterville, and culminating in 18 years at Marion. Along the way, he coached not only football but also baseball, softball, boys track, and girls track, touching countless young lives across multiple sports.

His achievements on the football field are remarkable. In 1996, Kerry led his team to a State Football Championship in Class 3A, earning recognition as a Channel One Coach of the Year finalist that same year. His sustained excellence placed him among the top 50 winningest football coaches in Illinois state history, an accomplishment that led to his induction into the Illinois High School Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

Yet Kerry's impact extended beyond the field. In the 1997-98 school year, he was named KFVS 12 Teacher of the Year, a testament to his commitment to educating young minds in the classroom. His influence in the broader community was recognized when he received the Marion Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award in 2022.
