Since 2008, the SIH Brain & Spine Institute has been caring for patients across Southern Illinois with the region’s largest and most established neuroscience program. Our specialists in stroke, neurology, neurosurgery, interventional pain management and rehabilitation work side by side to provide advanced, coordinated care close to home — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We are nationally recognized through certification by the Joint Commission and participation in the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines® program for stroke.

  • Stroke Care: Certified Primary Stroke Centers at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and SIH Herrin Hospital, along with Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals in Murphysboro and Harrisburg, ensure that life-saving stroke care is available throughout the region.
  • Neurology: Our neurologists diagnose and manage disorders of the nervous system using advanced tools such as the region’s first 3T MRI and EEG testing for brain activity, supporting care for conditions including stroke, epilepsy and tumors.
  • Neurosurgery: With technologies like StealthStation™ surgical navigation and the O-arm™ O2 imaging system, our neurosurgeons deliver precise, minimally invasive cranial and spinal procedures. Nurse navigators help guide patients through every step of their surgical journey.
  • Interventional Pain Management: For chronic back and neck pain, we provide targeted treatments such as injections, spinal cord stimulation and nerve ablation to restore function and quality of life. Conditions treated include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, radiculopathy, migraines and cancer-related pain.
  • Rehabilitation: SIH offers both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation across Southern Illinois, including acute rehabilitation as well as physical, occupational and speech therapy. These services are available at our hospitals and outpatient facilities, giving patients convenient access to comprehensive rehabilitation care close to home.

The SIH Brain & Spine Institute

The SIH Brain & Spine Institute is home to our entire neuroscience service line, bringing together a unique team of specialists who provide expert care both in the hospital and in outpatient clinics. Inside the hospital, our neurointensivists are specially trained to care for patients with critical neurological conditions. Under the leadership of our inpatient medical director, Andrea Loggini, MD, they collaborate with physicians, nurses, and staff to deliver advanced, big city care right here in Southern Illinois.

That same high level of care continues after discharge through our outpatient clinics. To ensure a smooth transition, a neuro program coordinator follows your progress during hospitalization, and an RN navigator supports you once you return home. Because inpatient and outpatient teams are housed in the same facility, they work side-by-side, ensuring seamless, evidence-based care every step of the way.

Neurological conditions can affect nearly every aspect of life — from walking and talking to vision, movement and sensation. The nervous system is vast and complex, which can make diagnosis challenging and symptoms difficult to live with.

At SIH, our mission is to partner with patients to improve quality of life and help them reach personalized goals. For some, this may mean reducing back pain to return to favorite activities. For others, it may mean regaining hand function to eat independently or rebuilding strength after a stroke to return to independent living. Whatever your goals, our neuroscience team is here to help.
