CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- SIH continues to see dozens of mask donations daily in response to the personal protective equipment shortage.

Denise Glennon's mother is a former nurse who taught her how to sow; she understands the need for masks when a loved one is sick.

"I saw that there were things happening in New York, things happening in the west coast, and that they were low on PPEs, and I couldn't locate any, so I thought I would make some for my mom and her caregiver," she said.

Glennon says as a nurse herself she was motivated to help other health care workers. She's already made 300 masks.

"Today, I brought 30, and I've dropped off--we've dropped off 100, besides that,"

Community affairs president Woody Thorne says the SIH office receives multiple donations a day.

"It means a whole lot for the community to be supporting our caregivers and SIH and all of our hospitals and caregivers in this way," he said.

SIH employees say there are multiple ways you can help donate to their hospitals.

"We've started a COVID relief fund through our SIH Foundation, and half of the proceeds of that fund are going to help agencies that are serving the most vulnerable here in our communities and then the other half is going to help those who are caregiver," said Thorne.

Glennon encourages all communities to continue supporting health professionals.

"Their bravery really touches me to the core and I can't do that, I would, but I can't. I have to stay healthy. This is one way I can still stay connected with who I consider my peers: any nurse, anywhere."
