SIH Celebrates Volunteers Across the Region at Annual Appreciation Luncheon

SIH honored the heart and soul of its hospitals — more than 100 volunteers and auxilians — during its annual Systemwide Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 23 at Giant City Lodge.
Volunteers from SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, the SIH Cancer Institute, SIH Herrin Hospital, SIH Harrisburg Medical Center, SIH St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Second Act, and the volunteer chaplain program came together to celebrate their shared commitment to service and community.
Set against the natural beauty of Giant City State Park, the luncheon recognized the thousands of hours and immeasurable acts of kindness performed each year by SIH volunteers.
“Each of you makes a difference — and together, you make a profound impact on thousands of our neighbors across Southern Illinois,” said SIH President and CEO John Antes. “Your passion and generosity embody the values that define our organization.”
Volunteers Lead with Compassion
From assisting patients and families to operating gift shops, escorting visitors and raising funds, volunteers support both daily operations and long-term goals at SIH facilities. In 2023 alone, Herrin and Harrisburg Hospital volunteers contributed more than 9,000 service hours combined — and have raised millions in support of patient care initiatives over the years.
“You’re the first smile many of our patients and staff see,” said Rodney Smith, vice president and administrator of SIH Herrin Hospital and SIH Harrisburg Medical Center. “And sometimes, a warm smile and a kind word make all the difference.”
Volunteers also help fund important projects. The Herrin Hospital Auxiliary recently contributed toward a new robotic surgical arm, cafeteria upgrades and phone charging stations for waiting areas.
“You may not provide direct medical care, but the comfort you offer is just as healing,” said Jeff Stewart, director of mission integration. “Your dedication helps carry out our mission to improve the health and well-being of all people in the communities we serve.”
Real Connections, Real Impact
Liz Issler, president of the SIH Herrin Hospital Auxiliary and retired administrative assistant, has volunteered for nearly a decade. For her, it’s all about the relationships — and the joy of making someone’s day better.
“Whether it’s a scared child or a worried visitor, if you can bring a little light into their day, that’s what matters,” said Issler. “Plus, the friendships I’ve made through the auxiliary are priceless.”
Always Room for More
SIH Manager of Volunteer Services Paula Frisch shared that all SIH facilities are actively seeking new volunteers — from high school and college students to retirees.
“Our volunteers are pillars of our hospital communities,” Frisch said. “They ease anxiety, create connections, and often make the hospital feel just a little more like home.”
Woody Thorne, chief development officer, emphasized that volunteers are essential to the success of not-for-profit healthcare systems like SIH.
“Your time, talents and generosity not only support patient care but also strengthen our ability to serve the region more effectively and equitably,” Thorne said.
