As we move through our fifties and beyond, staying socially connected becomes a powerful part of staying healthy. How often we talk with friends or family, how often we meet up, whether we attend church or club meetings, and even our marital status all play a role in our overall well‑being. Research from the National Institute on Aging shows that strong social ties can lower the risk of depression and help people stay mentally sharp. Studies also suggest that loneliness can increase the risk of early death by 30%. That is how important connection truly is. Staying connected does not have to be complicated. A weekly phone call, a lunch date, or attending a community meeting can lift your mood and strengthen your sense of belonging. Being part of a group—whether it is a club, a church community, or a volunteer organization—gives purpose and structure to your week. Even attending a meeting once or twice a month can make a meaningful difference.
