A Positive Connection
October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a reminder that mental health matters at every age. At SIH Second Act, we believe one of the best ways to support mental and emotional well-being is through meaningful connections with others.
Living in rural Southern Illinois offers a variety of benefits, but it can also create challenges. Adults over 50 may experience isolation due to transportation barriers, distance from family, health concerns or the loss of a spouse or close friends. Research shows that loneliness and social isolation can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, cognitive decline and other health concerns. National Institute on Aging. Beginning in 1999, Second Act has been a social outreach program of SIH Marketing & Communications, helping adults age 50 and older build friendships and stay active.
Monthly Eat & Educate programs offer a social and educational gathering where members share a meal and hear from experts on topics ranging from health and wellness to local interests, travel, finance and lifelong learning.
Designated Destinations allow members to meet up and enjoy time together at locations such as tours, attractions and special events.
STAR Groups are member-led activity groups that bring people together around shared interests, including games, creative arts, hobbies, fitness and social activities.
These activities provide opportunities to learn, laugh, connect and support one another.
