Memorial Hospital of Carbondale Auxiliary

Dues are $10.00 per year for the period beginning April 1. The auxiliary’s annual membership meeting is held each year in early spring, when new officers are elected and installed. Volunteers who complete a 3-4 hour shift will receive a free meal and drink in the employee cafeteria ($6.00 limit).

Volunteer Opportunities

Pink Geranium Gift Shop

Volunteer duties include operating the cash register and charge card machine, wrapping gifts, processing phone orders, and providing customer service. Two shifts are available weekdays, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm The Pink Geranium Gift Shop is operated by the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and proceeds are donated to the hospital.

Main Lobby Information Desk

Volunteer duties include delivering flowers and mail to patients, transporting patients and visitors by wheelchair, assisting with bulk mailings, and answering visitor questions. Two shifts are available weekdays, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

Surgery Reception Volunteer Desk

Volunteer duties include communicating patient status to families and friends, providing comfort to waiting visitors, assisting physicians with locating family members and answering phones. Two shifts are available weekdays, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm and 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Same Day Surgery Prep & Recovery

Volunteer duties include gathering carts from other areas, cleaning and preparing carts for patient use, securing patients’ personal belongings, escorting family and friends to patients’ bedside, providing support to nurses. Hours are flexible Monday-Friday.

Emergency Room Volunteers

Shifts are flexible and available 24 hours a day, Monday through Sunday. Volunteer duties include computer data entry, filing, cleaning carts, stocking linens, and providing support to staff, patients and families. Hours are flexible and available 24 hours a day, but a one-year commitment is necessary.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

We’re always in need of volunteers who can give a few hours of their time to work on a project-by-project basis such as quilting squares for the quilt raffle, sewing baby clothes, blankets and pillows for preemies and working at the Red Cross Blood drives. Other volunteer assignments may be possible upon request (i.e. medical records, education, food and nutrition, etc.)

Junior Volunteers

The Junior Volunteer Program gives teenagers an opportunity to volunteer in designated areas of the hospital’s departments during the summer. The summer program for youth, ages 14 through 17, starts mid-June and ends mid-August.

College Volunteers

The College Volunteer Program gives students an opportunity to volunteer in many of the hospital’s departments. Program runs year round.

Blood Drives

Blood drives in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale occur four times a year. Duties include assisting the American Red Cross personnel with registration, serving refreshments, escorting donors and organizing pouches.
